Frostpunk developer 11 bit Studios has taken an unexpected turn with their latest announcement. On April 24, via a post on X (formerly Twitter), they introduced Frostpunk 1886, a complete remake of the original game, leveraging the power of the Unreal Engine.

The game promises to feature an entirely new Purpose Path, the much-anticipated mod support, and a host of other enhancements, all while preserving the essence of the original game. In a detailed Steam post on the same day, the developers outlined their vision for this ambitious project.

Moving away from their proprietary Liquid Engine, which was used to build the first Frostpunk, 11 bit Studios is embracing the Unreal Engine. Having developed Frostpunk 2 with Unreal Engine 5, the studio recognized the potential to elevate their initial game to new heights.
