11 bit studios has exciting news for fans of the Frostpunk series, announcing the development of Frostpunk 1886, a remake of the original game set to release in 2027. This announcement comes just over six months after the launch of Frostpunk 2. With the original Frostpunk having debuted in 2018, the upcoming remake will mark nearly a decade since the series began.

For this project, 11 bit studios is leveraging the power of Unreal Engine 5, marking a significant shift from their previous proprietary Liquid Engine, which also powered This War of Mine. This transition aims to enhance the legacy of the original game and bring new life to its challenging world.

Frostpunk is a renowned city-building survival game set in an alternate history of the late 19th century, where players must navigate a world gripped by a volcanic winter. The game challenges players to construct and manage a city, make critical survival decisions, and explore the surrounding areas for resources and survivors.

IGN's review of the first Frostpunk awarded it a stellar 9/10, praising its unique blend of thematic ideas and gameplay elements, although noting some occasional unintuitive mechanics. Frostpunk 2, on the other hand, received an 8/10, with IGN commending the game for its expanded scale and increased social and political complexity, though it lost some of the intimacy of the original.

Despite the focus on the new remake, 11 bit studios assures fans that Frostpunk 2 will continue to receive updates, including free major content updates, a console launch, and additional DLCs. The studio's dedication to both titles underscores their commitment to the Frostpunk universe.

Frostpunk 1886 is more than just a visual upgrade; it honors a critical moment in the game's timeline, the Great Storm that descended upon New London. The remake promises to build on the original's core by introducing new content, mechanics, laws, and an innovative new Purpose path, ensuring a fresh experience for all players. Additionally, the use of Unreal Engine 5 will enable the game to support modding, fulfilling a long-standing community request, and allow for future DLC expansions.

11 bit studios envisions a future where Frostpunk 2 and Frostpunk 1886 evolve together, each offering unique paths of survival in the relentless cold. Alongside these projects, the studio is also preparing for the release of The Alters in June, promising a busy and exciting future for fans of their work.
