Free-to-Play Shooter Spectre Divide Shutting Down Weeks After Console Launch

Author:Kristen Update:Mar 18,2025

The free-to-play 3v3 shooter, Spectre Divide, is shutting down just six months after its September 2024 launch and weeks after its arrival on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Sadly, its developer, Mountaintop Studios, is also closing its doors.

Mountaintop CEO, Nate Mitchell, confirmed the news in a social media statement. He explained that the Season 1 launch fell short of the success needed to sustain the game and the studio. While initially optimistic, with approximately 400,000 players in the first week and a peak concurrent player count of around 10,000 across all platforms, the game ultimately lacked the sustained player base and revenue to cover operating costs. Despite exploring options like finding a publisher, securing additional investment, or seeking acquisition, Mountaintop was unable to secure the necessary funding. Mitchell acknowledged the challenging current state of the gaming industry.

The statement continued that, despite stretching remaining capital since the PC launch, they ultimately ran out of funding. Spectre Divide will be taken offline within the next 30 days, with refunds issued for all player spending since the Season 1 launch.

This news directly contradicts October 2024 reports stating Spectre Divide was secure. Mitchell previously assured the public that Mountaintop had sufficient funds to support the game long-term.

PlayIGN's August 2024 preview praised *Spectre Divide*'s unique Duality system, allowing players to control two characters simultaneously. However, this rapid shutdown follows other recent high-profile live-service game failures, including *Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League* and *Concord*.
