Hironobu Sakaguchi, the mastermind behind the Final Fantasy series, is driven to create a new game inspired by Final Fantasy 6, following the acclaim of his recent project, Fantasian Neo Dimension, released in 2021. In a revealing interview with The Verge, Sakaguchi confessed that he had intended Fantasian to be his swan song. Yet, the joy of working with the talented team behind Fantasian has reignited his passion, leading him to embark on a new endeavor. He hopes this new game will serve as "a successor to Final Fantasy VI," blending the old with the new to craft what he calls "part two of my farewell note."

In a 2024 interview with Famitsu, Sakaguchi shared that he's been diligently working on this new project for about a year since scripting began. He anticipates reaching a significant milestone in roughly two years. The excitement around his work intensified when Mistwalker filed a trademark for "FANTASIAN DARK AGE" in June 2024, sparking speculation about a possible sequel. While Sakaguchi confirmed the project will maintain the fantasy RPG style of his previous works, official details on the game's title and further specifics remain under wraps.

The collaboration between Mistwalker and Square Enix brought FANTASIAN Neo Dimension to multiple platforms including PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch in December 2024. Initially launched on Apple Arcade in 2021, Fantasian has garnered praise as one of the platform's top games. Reflecting on this partnership, Sakaguchi expressed a sense of coming full circle, returning to the company where his illustrious career began in 1983. After directing the first five mainline Final Fantasy games and producing Final Fantasy 6 through 11, Sakaguchi founded Mistwalker in 2003, where he developed titles like Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, and The Last Story. Despite this recent collaboration, Sakaguchi remains focused on new creations rather than revisiting his past works, stating he has "switched to a consumer rather than a creator."
