DRAGON BALL: Sparking! ZERO's early access release for Deluxe and Ultimate edition pre-orderers has unleashed a formidable foe: Great Ape Vegeta. This colossal primate is proving to be an unexpectedly brutal challenge, leaving players battered and bewildered.
Boss battles are designed to test player skill, but Great Ape Vegeta in DRAGON BALL: Sparking! ZERO transcends mere difficulty. His devastating attacks and seemingly uncounterable moves have created a near-universal struggle. The situation has become so dire that even Bandai Namco has joined the meme-fest, acknowledging the widespread frustration.
Anyone familiar with Vegeta's Great Ape transformation in Dragon Ball Z knows the destructive potential. Sparking Zero amplifies this power to an almost comical degree. The fight begins with a relentless assault of energy blasts, including the infamous Galick Gun, and a health-draining grab attack. Survival, rather than skillful combat, becomes the primary objective, with players often restarting upon seeing the Galick Gun charge-up.
This challenge is amplified by Great Ape Vegeta's early appearance in Goku's Episode Battle, presenting a significant hurdle for newcomers to the Dragon Ball fighting game franchise. The onslaught of super moves right from the start can be overwhelming.
Instead of immediate patching, Bandai Namco opted for humorous engagement. Responding to the collective player outcry, their UK Twitter (X) account posted a meme featuring a GIF of Great Ape Vegeta overwhelming Goku, simply stating, "This monke got hands."
It's worth noting that challenging Great Ape Vegeta encounters are a recurring theme in Dragon Ball fighting games. Veterans may recall similar struggles in the original Budokai Tenkaichi, where the fight felt like a true test of endurance.
Great Ape Vegeta isn't the sole source of player frustration. Even on Normal difficulty, CPU opponents unleash punishing combos, a problem exacerbated on Super difficulty where the AI seems to possess an unfair advantage. The common solution? A humbling descent to Easy mode.
Despite the widespread difficulty, DRAGON BALL: Sparking! ZERO has made a significant impact. Early access saw a peak of 91,005 concurrent Steam players, surpassing established fighting game giants like Street Fighter, Tekken, and Mortal Kombat.
This success is unsurprising, as Sparking! ZERO represents the highly anticipated revival of the Budokai Tenkaichi series. Game8 awarded the game a 92 score, praising its roster, visuals, and diverse scenarios, calling it "the best Dragon Ball game in ages." For a more in-depth review, check out our related article.
