A fan has completely recreated the Elden Ring in Excel

A Reddit user, brightyh360, shared an incredible project on the r/excel subreddit: a top-down Elden Ring recreation built entirely within Microsoft Excel. This feat of programming prowess took approximately 40 hours – 20 hours for coding and another 20 for rigorous testing and debugging. The creator proudly stated the final product was well worth the effort.

This impressive Excel game boasts:

  • A sprawling 90,000-cell map;
  • Over 60 unique weapons;
  • 50+ diverse enemies;
  • A fully functional character and weapon upgrade system;
  • Three distinct character classes (tank, mage, assassin) with varying playstyles;
  • More than 25 armor sets;
  • Six NPCs with engaging quests;
  • Four different game endings.

While entirely free to play, the game utilizes keyboard shortcuts for control: CTRL + WASD for movement and CTRL + E for interactions. Reddit moderators have verified the file's safety, though users are advised to exercise caution due to the extensive use of macros.

Interestingly, the game's Erd Tree has drawn comparisons to a Christmas tree, particularly on Christmas Eve. User Independent-Design17 suggests the Australian Christmas tree, Nuytsia floribunda, may have served as inspiration. They highlight the striking resemblance between in-game "Small Erd Trees" and the Nuytsia. Furthermore, the cultural significance of the Nuytsia as a "spirit tree" in Aboriginal Australian culture, mirroring the Erd Tree's association with the souls of the departed in Elden Ring's catacombs, adds another layer of fascinating depth to this observation.
