Should You Fight Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins?

Fighting Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins is no small feat. In my experience, it took over an hour to conquer this legendary figure. Yet, there are compelling reasons to engage him in battle.

Firstly, the prestige of defeating Lu Bu is immense, offering bragging rights and a badge of honor. Secondly, depending on your allegiance with Shu or Wei, you might be forced to confront him during the Battle of Xiapi in Chapter 4. Finally, triumphing over Lu Bu at the Battle of Hulao Gate earns you the "The Strongest" trophy, and defeating him in the post-game unlocks the coveted final weapon, the halberd, providing strong motivation to face him.

Lu Bu’s First Phase

Before engaging Lu Bu, ensure you're equipped with gear capable of withstanding his might. A weapon like a sword, capable of multiple hits and staggering him, is essential. Choose Battle Arts that are quick to activate, require minimal Bravery, and have a broad range. In my battle, I used Falcon Flurry, Mad Blade Rush, Absconding Slash, and Flying Dragon Slash. Accessories such as Divine Bird’s Wing and Divine Turtle’s Shell to boost your health and defense are crucial, as Lu Bu's attacks can rapidly deplete your health. Also, select a weapon with a skill that grants Bravery for each Perfect Evade, as this will be key to gaining Bravery during the fight.

In most encounters, Lu Bu starts the battle mounted on Red Hare. This initial phase involves him charging around the battlefield. He's swift, but he pauses occasionally, offering opportunities to strike with your Battle Arts before retreating. His attacks have limited AOE, except for Red Hare’s leap and crash, which are manageable to dodge. Once his health drops to 80%, Lu Bu dismounts, and the real challenge begins.

Lu Bu’s Second Phase

On foot, Lu Bu becomes even more formidable. His attacks are swift and he moves rapidly across the battlefield, often enveloped in a red aura, making him immune to staggering. Be vigilant for his charging sequences, which always come in sets of three. If he charges without his spear, he's attempting a grab that can severely damage your health, but it's easily evaded.

His most lethal move is signaled by an orange glow, leading to a barrage of three massive arrows fired three times, capable of juggling and devastating your health. To counter this, use a long-range Battle Art like Absconding Slash. Close-quarters arts like Palm Strike will result in instant death. Keep your Musou gauge charged for emergencies, as it grants brief invincibility, crucial for survival.

Lu Bu is surprisingly susceptible to being juggled during this phase. Continuous attacks can quickly charge your Battle Arts and deplete his Fortitude meter. Stay close to better anticipate his moves, and remember, evasion is key.

Lu Bu’s Final Phase

As you reduce Lu Bu's health significantly, he enters Musou Rage, marking the final phase. Now unstaggered, he unleashes a relentless barrage of attacks. Your objective is to break his Fortitude before he executes his Musou attack. Use all available resources—activate your Musou attacks, deploy Battle Arts, and strike relentlessly. If Lu Bu completes his Musou Attack, he'll immediately start another, forcing you to restart the phase. Successfully breaking his Fortitude here will finally allow you to defeat this formidable adversary.

And that’s how you can conquer Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins! The game is now available on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
