The Last of Us Composer Teases Season 4 Confirmation

Author:Kristen Update:Jul 29,2025

The composer for HBO's acclaimed The Last of Us TV show has confirmed that the series will see "at least two additional seasons," hinting strongly at a Season 4.

"There will definitely be at least two more seasons," Jake Staley stated during an interview on The Last of Us: Savage Starlight podcast. "That’s all I’ll share for now."

This revelation aligns with recent comments from showrunner Craig Mazin, who suggested a fourth season is likely necessary to complete the series' narrative. Mazin noted that wrapping up the story, drawn from Naughty Dog’s two video games, in just Season 3 would be challenging, as it "would take too long." While there’s a "good possibility" Season 3 may have more episodes than Season 2, Mazin emphasized that "the story cannot be fully told in just a third season."

HBO has celebrated the triumph of The Last of Us Season 2, reporting that the show’s global viewership has surged past 90 million since the conclusion of Season 1. However, the network noted that the Season 2 finale saw lower viewership due to its airing over the Memorial Day holiday weekend. Additionally, Mazin and Neil Druckmann recently hinted that the presence of some fan-favorite characters in future seasons remains uncertain.

Over the weekend, the HBO series team appeared at IGN Live to discuss key moments in adapting the game for television, detailing the creation of iconic scenes like Joel’s death, the horde attack, the planetarium, and more.
