Chris Evans Says He Isn't Returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for Another Avengers

Author:Kristen Update:Apr 02,2025

Chris Evans, known for his iconic role as Captain America, has firmly stated that he will not be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) for "Avengers: Doomsday" or any other film, contrary to recent reports. In an interview with Esquire, Evans debunked a Deadline article claiming his return alongside fellow original Avenger Robert Downey Jr., clarifying, "That's not true, though. This always happens. I mean, it happens every couple years, ever since Endgame. I've just stopped responding to it. Yeah, no. Happily retired."

This statement came after Anthony Mackie, who assumed the Captain America mantle following Evans' departure in "Avengers: Endgame," shared with Esquire that he had been told by his manager that Evans might return. However, Mackie later confirmed directly with Evans, who told him, "Oh, you know, I'm happily retired."

While Evans has made a cameo as Johnny Storm in "Deadpool & Wolverine," a more comedic and less central role than his Captain America portrayal, he remains steadfast in his retirement from the MCU.

The MCU faces uncertainty following the departure of Jonathan Majors, who played Kang and was set to be the franchise's next major antagonist akin to Thanos. Majors' exit after being found guilty of assault and harassment has led Marvel to pivot, announcing Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, the new big bad. This shift has fueled speculation about the return of other original Avengers, although no official confirmations have been made.

In other MCU developments, Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Doctor Strange, has confirmed he will not appear in "Avengers: Doomsday" but will have a "central role" in its sequel, "Avengers: Secret Wars." The Russo Brothers, former directors of the Avengers films, are set to helm "Secret Wars," which is expected to delve deeper into the multiverse narrative, with Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter also slated to appear.
