"Catacomb of Torment Honors Classic Horror Comic Cover"

Author:Kristen Update:Jun 17,2025

1954's *Crime SuspenStories #22* is widely regarded as one of the most notorious and unforgettable horror comics ever printed. Even if you don't recognize the title, chances are you've come across the chilling image of a man holding his wife’s severed head while wielding an ax in one hand. This controversial issue played a pivotal role in fueling the anti-comic book sentiment of the 1950s, ultimately contributing to the establishment of the Comics Code Authority and marking the end of an era for EC Comics.

Fortunately, EC Comics has made a dramatic return—reborn as a vibrant new imprint under Oni Press. It’s only fitting that one of its latest releases pays homage to Johnny Craig’s infamous cover art from *Crime SuspenStories #22*. IGN is proud to exclusively reveal Jay Stephens’ tribute cover for *Catacomb of Torment #1*, part of a continuing series celebrating classic EC comic aesthetics. Take a look below:

*Catacomb of Torment* is one of several exciting new titles launching under EC Comics' “Summer of Fear” initiative. As a horror anthology series, it brings together an all-star lineup of creators including John Arcudi, Marguerite Bennett, Dan McDaid, Matt Kindt, David Lapham, and Tonči Zonjić. The series will be joined by *Blood Type*, written by Corinna Bechko with art by Andrea Sorrentino, and *Cruel Universe 2*, featuring work from J. Holtham, Kano, Ann Nocenti, David Rubín, and Greg Smallwood.

“Our EC Comics line has not only become the best-selling series in Oni Press’ nearly 30-year history, but it’s also been an absolute blast to produce,” said Hunter Gorinson, President & Publisher at Oni Press. “After surpassing our own expectations with last year’s *Epitaphs From the Abyss*, *Cruel Universe*, and *Cruel Kingdom*, we’re pushing ourselves even harder this year—to go bigger, bolder, and yes… bloodier. EC Comics is back, and we’re just getting started.”

“Working on EC over the past year has been a deeply inspiring experience for everyone involved—from the team at Oni Press to our creative collaborators who bring these stories to life,” added Sierra Hahn, Oni Press Editor-in-Chief. “It’s a joy to continue crafting these compelling morality tales alongside some of the best storytellers in the industry. This summer’s lineup is no exception.”
