This LEGO Art rendition of Vincent van Gogh's Sunflowers is substantial—21 inches high and 16 inches wide, roughly 60% the size of the original masterpiece. Its scale demands to be displayed as art, highlighting LEGO's evolution into a sophisticated adult hobby. This isn't just a toy; it's a tribute deserving of a prominent place in your home.

Van Gogh painted his iconic Sunflowers series during his prolific Arles period, deeply connecting with the flower as a symbol of gratitude. He considered it his artistic muse, writing to a friend: "If [Georges] Jeannin has the peony, [Ernest] Quost the hollyhock, I indeed, before others, have taken the sunflower."
He created four versions in August 1888, revisiting the motif in January 1889 with repetitions of the third and fourth versions. The fourth version and its repetitions are the most famous, with originals displayed in London, Tokyo, and Amsterdam.
The LEGO Van Gogh Museum collaboration recreates the Amsterdam version (F458) as a 3D relief, using abstract pieces to capture Van Gogh's distinctive brushstrokes.
The 34 numbered bags and instruction booklet include a QR code linking to a podcast about Van Gogh and his inspirations. The build process is thoughtfully designed: you construct the frame first, then the canvas, finally mounting the canvas into the frame with pins—a clever touch mirroring the real-life process.
A delightful Easter egg replicates a detail discovered by art experts: Van Gogh added a wooden strip to the top of the original canvas. LEGO cleverly mirrors this with a separate strip, adding a layer of authenticity and a rewarding “inside joke” for the builder.
Building the sunflowers is detailed but rewarding. The repetitive nature reflects Van Gogh's meticulous process. Take your time; this isn't a race. The wilting flowers and unique perspectives add depth and complexity, revealing themselves upon stepping back to view the completed piece.
The completed set's natural destination is a wall, making it a unique piece of art for your home. Even a week after completion, the 3D details continue to delight. This is a superb LEGO set, highly recommended for its artistry, build process, and lasting enjoyment.
LEGO Vincent van Gogh - Sunflowers, Set #31215, retails for $199.99, contains 2615 pieces, and is available exclusively at the LEGO Store.
