Borderlands 4 Launches Early Amid GTA 6 Hype

Borderlands 4, Gearbox's highly anticipated FPS, is launching 11 days ahead of schedule. Development head Randy Pitchford revealed the surprise update in what appears to be a prematurely released video.

The game's release has shifted from September 23 to September 12, now hitting PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2 simultaneously.

"Production couldn't be going better," Pitchford enthusiastically shared in the footage. "We're exceeding expectations - the team's firing on all cylinders and the game shines. That's why we're pushing the launch forward to September 12."

"Can you believe it? Studios never move release dates up!" Pitchford continued. "But Borderlands 4 is arriving early!" He also confirmed a dedicated PlayStation State of Play presentation is coming soon.

The unexpected schedule change raises questions about potential competition with Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto VI, currently slated for fall 2025. Could Borderlands 4 be creating distance from GTA VI's eventual launch window?

Notably, both franchises fall under Take-Two's umbrella - Borderlands through 2K Games and GTA through Rockstar. Executive leadership, including CEO Strauss Zelnick, would naturally coordinate releases to maximize each title's success. Perhaps clearer projections about GTA VI's timeline prompted this strategic adjustment.

Borderlands 4's September 12 launch likely rules out GTA VI debuting in August or September 2025. This leaves October through December as possible windows, though Take-Two must avoid cannibalizing sales between franchises - including summer 2025's Mafia: The Old Country from 2K.

During a February interview, CEO Zelnick emphasized careful scheduling to prevent internal competition. "We'll space releases appropriately," he assured, noting players need time to fully enjoy each major title.

"Successful games actually create momentum for others in the market," Zelnick explained. "While we aim for our titles to be those hits, carefully timed launches allow players to properly experience each before moving to the next."

However, GTA VI could still face delays into winter 2025 or early 2026. When pressed about Rockstar hitting the projected window, Zelnick remained cautiously optimistic: "There's always development risk, but we're confident in our current timeline."
