Steam Player Count Surges After Patch 8 Release

Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) has concluded its remarkable journey with the release of Patch 8 on April 15, 2025. This final major update from Larian Studios has propelled the game's player count from around 60,000 to over 169,000 concurrent players, positioning it just outside Steam’s top 10 most played games.

Swen Vincke, CEO of Larian Studios, shared his thoughts on Twitter (X) on April 22 about the surge in player numbers following Patch 8's release. He emphasized the importance of the game’s modding community, which allows Larian to shift focus to their next big project. It's been confirmed that Larian Studios will move away from the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) Universe to explore new creative ventures.

In light of this, Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro, owners of D&D, will continue the Baldur’s Gate franchise independently. They are currently in discussions with other studios to potentially develop a Baldur’s Gate 4.

12 New Subclasses, Photo Mode, and More!

Announced in November 2024, Patch 8 has been eagerly anticipated by the community. The update introduces 12 new subclasses, a photo mode, cross-play functionality, and numerous other enhancements. Larian Studios provided a comprehensive list of patch notes on the BG3 website, highlighting extensive bug fixes and combat balance adjustments that polish the game to its final state.
