Balatro Dev Localthunk Resolves AI Art Reddit Controversy

Author:Kristen Update:May 13,2025

Localthunk, the creative force behind the popular roguelike poker game Balatro, recently addressed a controversy stirred by a former moderator's stance on AI-generated art within the game's subreddit community. The issue came to light thanks to coverage from Garbage Day and Rock Paper Shotgun, detailing how DrTankHead, a former moderator of the Balatro subreddit and current moderator of an NSFW Balatro subreddit, had announced that AI-generated art would be permitted if properly labeled.

In a clear and concise statement on Bluesky, Localthunk swiftly dispelled any confusion, stating that neither they nor their publisher, Playstack, condoned the use of AI-generated imagery. This was followed by a more detailed post on the Balatro subreddit, where Localthunk reiterated their stance against AI "art" due to its potential harm to artists and confirmed that DrTankHead had been removed from the moderation team. They also announced a new policy prohibiting AI-generated images on the subreddit, promising to update the rules and FAQ accordingly.

Playstack's communications director acknowledged in a follow-up that the existing rules could have been clearer, especially a rule that allowed "no unlabeled AI content," which may have been misinterpreted. The remaining moderation team plans to clarify these guidelines to prevent future misunderstandings.

DrTankHead, now removed from the r/Balatro mod team, responded on the NSFW Balatro subreddit, stating that while they do not aim to make the subreddit AI-centric, they were considering designated times for posting non-NSFW AI-generated art. This suggestion met with mixed reactions from the community, with one user suggesting a break from Reddit might be in order.

The debate over AI-generated content in the gaming and entertainment industries is intense, fueled by ethical concerns, copyright issues, and the struggle to create engaging content. Recent examples include Keywords Studios' failed attempt to develop an entirely AI-generated game, highlighting AI's limitations in replacing human creativity. Despite such setbacks, major companies like EA and Capcom are doubling down on AI technology, with EA proclaiming AI as central to its business model and Capcom exploring AI for generating game environment ideas. Activision's use of AI for assets in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has also sparked controversy, particularly regarding a poorly received AI-generated zombie Santa loading screen.

This situation underscores the ongoing tension between technological innovation and the preservation of human creativity in the arts and entertainment sectors.
