The 10 Best Game Boy Advance & Nintendo DS Games on Nintendo Switch – SwitchArcade Special

Author:Kristen Update:Jan 20,2025

A fresh look at retro gaming on the Nintendo Switch! Unlike some other consoles, the Switch boasts a smaller selection of distinct Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS ports. So, we're combining them into one list, mirroring the way they often shared shelf space back in the day. While the Nintendo Switch Online app offers many great GBA titles, this list focuses on those available on the Switch eShop. Here are ten favorites – four GBA and six Nintendo DS games – in no particular order. Let's dive in!

Game Boy Advance

Steel Empire (2004) – Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)

Kicking things off with the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. While the Genesis/Mega Drive original holds a personal preference, this GBA version is still a solid experience. A worthwhile play, especially for comparison, and offers a more streamlined gameplay in some aspects. Steel Empire is enjoyable regardless of the version, appealing even to those who aren't typically into shooters.

Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)

As the Mega Man X series faltered on home consoles, the Mega Man legacy found a true successor on the GBA. Mega Man Zero initiates an excellent side-scrolling action series, though its initial presentation could be smoother. Later entries refine the formula, but this first game is the perfect starting point. Feel free to continue the adventure from there.

Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)

A Mega Man double-feature! Mega Man Zero and Mega Man Battle Network offer distinct gameplay experiences, both excelling in their own right. Battle Network is an RPG featuring a unique battle system blending action and strategy. The concept of a virtual world within electronic devices is cleverly executed. While later entries in this series saw diminishing returns, the original offers plenty of fun.

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)

The Castlevania Advance Collection is worth playing in its entirety, but Aria of Sorrow stands out. On the right day, I'd even choose it over the amazing Symphony of the Night. Its soul-collecting system encourages grinding, but the gameplay is so engaging, it's hardly a drawback. The unique setting and hidden secrets add to its appeal, making it a top-tier GBA title.

Nintendo DS

Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)

The original Shantae was a cult classic, but limited distribution hindered its reach. The DSiWare release of Shantae: Risky’s Revenge broadened its audience, solidifying Shantae's place in gaming history. This game occupies a unique space, essentially rising from the ashes of an unreleased GBA title. Interestingly, that GBA game is also slated for release soon and might warrant inclusion on a future list.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)

For those concerned about list balance, this could (and perhaps should) be considered a GBA game, given its origins. Regardless, Ace Attorney needs no introduction. These fun adventure games blend investigations with dramatic courtroom scenes, goofy humor, and compelling stories. The first game is exceptional, though later installments are also strong contenders.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)

From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick shares its strong writing but features unique gameplay. As a ghost, you must use your abilities to save others while uncovering the truth behind your demise. This game is a wild ride, highly recommended from start to finish. Its original DS release was somewhat overlooked, but thankfully Capcom hasn't abandoned it.

The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)

The World Ends With You is arguably one of the best Nintendo DS games. The original DS version is ideal, as it's tightly integrated with the hardware. However, the Switch version provides a suitable alternative for those without access to a DS. This is a truly exceptional game in every aspect.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)

The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection includes all the Nintendo DS Castlevania games. Each is worthy of a playthrough, but Dawn of Sorrow benefits significantly from the replacement of touch controls with standard button controls. However, all three DS games in this collection are highly recommended.

Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)

This franchise thrives within the DS/3DS ecosystem. Atlus's Switch port is a commendable effort, resulting in a playable experience. Each Etrian Odyssey game stands alone, offering substantial RPG content. Etrian Odyssey III, the largest of the three, is a worthwhile, albeit slightly challenging, adventure.
