Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Confirms Cloud Save Support

Author:Kristen Update:Jan 18,2026

Nintendo has officially confirmed that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom for the Switch 2 will indeed support cloud saves.

While we knew the Nintendo Switch 2 would receive enhanced versions of popular Switch 1 titles, including The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, a recent disclaimer caused concern among fans. As IGN reported, there were worries that some of these upgraded games, or at least this particular one, might not be compatible with Nintendo’s cloud save feature as expected.

Initially, the official Nintendo page for the Switch 2 edition of Tears of the Kingdom included the notice: "Please note: this software does not support the Nintendo Switch Online paid membership’s Save Data Cloud backup feature."

Nintendo has since updated the website with more details. While references to cloud saves have been removed from the Donkey Kong Bananza page, the disclaimer for Tears of the Kingdom now reads: "Save data created in the second save data slot in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition cannot be transferred to The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom on Nintendo Switch."

The updated notice should ease concerns for Switch 2 owners.

This updated wording implies players can transfer their original Switch 1 Tears of the Kingdom save data to the Switch 2, but saves made on the Switch 2 cannot be moved back to the original system (thanks, Eurogamer).

The product page for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition now carries the same message, indicating a consistent save data transfer policy.

Pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 became available overnight. The price remains at $449.99, and as anticipated, demand was extremely high. For more details, visit IGN’s Nintendo Switch 2 pre-order guide.
