Starfield PS5 Release Rumors Swirl After Logo Spotted in Dev Build

Speculation about Starfield coming to PlayStation 5 intensified over the weekend after eagle-eyed fans noticed a PlayStation logo on Bethesda’s official Creations website. The logo was linked to a work-in-progress ship decals Creation for Starfield, which was subsequently removed. Despite the removal, fans are buzzing with excitement over the possibility of Bethesda's sci-fi RPG, previously exclusive to PC and Xbox, making its way to PS5.

The speculation has fans wondering if Bethesda is planning a significant content update or even a new expansion to coincide with a PS5 release. The gaming community has been vocal about the lack of updates and communication following the underwhelming reception to the Shattered Space expansion. Bethesda, under its parent company Microsoft, is expected to hold a summer showcase where more details about Starfield might be revealed.

Bethesda has promised "exciting things" for Starfield this year, and in June 2024, the studio reaffirmed its commitment to the game, announcing at least one more story expansion after Shattered Space. In an interview with the YouTube channel MrMattyPlays, Bethesda Game Studios’ Todd Howard mentioned the goal of releasing an annual story expansion for Starfield for years to come.

Starfield debuted in September 2023 as Bethesda's first new intellectual property in years and their first major single-player title since Microsoft acquired ZeniMax Media in March 2021. IGN's review of Starfield scored it a 7/10, praising its expansive role-playing quests and solid combat system.

In January, Microsoft’s gaming boss, Phil Spencer, hinted that Starfield might eventually make it to PS5. Reports from March 2024 suggested that Starfield and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle were being considered for PS5. While Indiana Jones has been confirmed for PS5 with a spring 2025 release, Starfield remains unconfirmed, though Spencer's comments leave the door open.

Several Xbox titles are already available on PS5, including Sea of Thieves, Hi-Fi Rush, Grounded, and Pentiment. Microsoft continues to support cross-platform releases, with Minecraft on PlayStation consoles and upcoming titles like Doom: The Dark Ages and Ninja Gaiden 4 set for PS5. There's even talk of Halo finally breaking its Xbox exclusivity to arrive on PlayStation. Forza Horizon 5 is also slated for a PS5 release.

Spencer has articulated that Xbox's multiplatform strategy is partly driven by financial goals, especially after Microsoft's significant acquisition of Activision Blizzard for $69 billion. He emphasized the importance of delivering strong returns to Microsoft, given the substantial support the gaming division receives.

“We run a business,” Spencer said last August. “It’s definitely true inside of Microsoft the bar is high for us in terms of the delivery we have to give back to the company. Because we get a level of support from the company that’s just amazing and what we’re able to go do.

“So I look at this, how can we make our games as strong as possible? Our platform continues to grow, on console, on PC, and on cloud. It’s just going to be a strategy that works for us.”

Bethesda Game Studios, with its 450-strong team, is juggling multiple projects including Starfield, Elder Scrolls 6, Fallout 76, mobile games, and external development partnerships, making it a busy and pivotal time for the studio.
