Stardew Valley: Everything You Need To Know About Preserves Jars

Author:Kristen Update:May 03,2025

Using one's crops to craft artisan goods is one of the most lucrative strategies for earning money in Stardew Valley. While it's often at higher levels that players create extensive setups for producing Jelly and Wine, Preserves Jars become available quite early in the game, enabling even low-level players to boost their profits significantly.

There's a wide range of artisan goods that players can create using Preserves Jars, from pickles to caviar. Crafting these jars helps players maximize their earnings from fruits and vegetables and is crucial for making Fish Ponds profitable. Here's a comprehensive guide on how they function and their benefits.

Updated January 11, 2025, by Demaris Oxman: The 1.6 update of Stardew Valley introduced an exciting new feature for farmers: the ability to pickle many new items! Now, a variety of foraged items, from the common Dandelion to the rare and valuable Purple Mushroom, can be preserved in a Preserves Jar, increasing their value. For avid foragers and artisan goods crafters, this guide has been updated to cover all the new ways to utilize this essential farm item.

Where To Get Preserves Jars In Stardew Valley

Players unlock the recipe for the Preserves Jar upon reaching Farming Level 4. Crafting one requires:

  • 50 Wood
  • 40 Stone
  • 8 Coal

These materials are readily available, making the Preserves Jar an excellent choice for players aiming to produce artisan goods quickly. Wood is obtained by chopping down trees, Stone by breaking rocks with a pickaxe, and Coal can be farmed by defeating dust sprites in the Mines.

In addition to crafting, players can earn one Preserves Jar by completing the Quality Crops Bundle (or Rare Crops Bundle in remixed mode) at the Community Center. They might also find one in the Prize Machine at Mayor Lewis' house.

What Are Preserves Jars Used For In Stardew Valley?

Preserves Jars can transform various items into valuable artisan goods, as detailed below. If players select the Artisan profession at Farming Level 10, the sale price of each product increases by 40%.

Only Mushrooms and Forage items that provide positive energy when consumed, such as Chanterelle or Winter Root, can be pickled. Items like Red Mushroom and Holly, which are poisonous and reduce energy, cannot be used.

The pricing of the finished products is based on the base value of the input item, disregarding its quality. For instance, a Jelly made from a gold-quality Apricot has the same value as one made from a normal-quality Apricot. Therefore, it's recommended to use lower-quality produce in Preserves Jars to maximize profit.

Preserves Jars or Kegs?

Preserves Jars and Kegs are often compared, as both can turn fruits and vegetables into artisan goods. Preserves Jars are more profitable for fruits with a base value under 50g and vegetables/forage items under 160g. Additionally, Preserves Jars process goods faster than Kegs. Ideal crops for Jelly and Pickles are those with high yields and low base values, such as Eggplants, wild foraged berries, Corn, and Tomatoes.

Preserves Jars are the only way to enhance the value of Fish Roe, making them essential for Fish Pond setups. Similarly, Mushrooms, which cannot be used in Kegs, can be processed into more profitable goods using Preserves Jars, generally offering a higher profit margin than the Dehydrator.
