Sonic Galactic: A Sonic Mania-Inspired Fan Game

Sonic Galactic, a fan-made title from Starteam, evokes the spirit and style of the critically acclaimed Sonic Mania. This passion project taps into the enduring appeal of classic Sonic gameplay and pixel art, offering a nostalgic experience for seasoned fans.

The game's development, spanning at least four years, began with its unveiling at the 2020 Sonic Amateur Games Expo. Starteam envisioned a 32-bit era Sonic game, imagining a hypothetical Sega Saturn release. The result is a retro-inspired 2D platformer that stays true to the Genesis-era feel while incorporating unique elements.

New Playable Characters and Expanded Gameplay:

The second demo, released in early 2025, introduces two new playable characters alongside the iconic trio of Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles:

• Fang the Sniper: The fan-favorite from Sonic Triple Trouble, now joining the fight against Dr. Eggman.
• Tunnel the Mole: A brand-new character hailing from Sonic Frontiers' Illusion Island.

Each character boasts unique level paths, adding significant replayability. The special stages, reminiscent of Sonic Mania, challenge players to collect rings within a time limit in 3D environments. While a complete playthrough of Sonic's levels takes approximately one hour, the additional characters currently offer around one level each, resulting in a total playtime of a couple of hours. This is, however, only the second demo.

Following the success of Sonic Mania, and the subsequent release of Sonic Superstars, which opted for 3D graphics, Sonic Galactic demonstrates the continued fondness for the classic pixel art style and 2D gameplay that defined a generation of Sonic games.
