Exciting news for Star Wars fans: Shawn Levy, the acclaimed director behind Deadpool & Wolverine, is still hard at work on his upcoming Star Wars film. The project's writer, Jonathan Tropper, recently shared his enthusiasm with Screen Rant, saying, "I am [excited] too. I hope it's on the way sooner than you think." This reassurance comes as a breath of fresh air for fans eagerly awaiting new content in the galaxy far, far away.
While much about the film remains shrouded in mystery, we do know it will be set after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has confirmed the movie's timeline, stating, "That's also in the future... It's all post-[the first] nine. Shawn's is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." This positions Levy's film as the first to delve into the post-Rise of Skywalker era, promising a fresh narrative landscape.
Kennedy also shared that Levy's film will follow the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu in 2026, indicating fans might have to wait until at least the last quarter of 2026, if not 2027, for this new adventure. Adding to the excitement, it's been reported that Ryan Gosling is set to star in the film, bringing his star power to the Star Wars universe.
Since the release of Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, Disney has been selective about its Star Wars projects, cancelling several planned films, including one from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. A previously announced Star Wars movie slated for late 2026 was also pulled from Disney's calendar.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm announced three new Star Wars feature films: a New Republic film directed by Dave Filoni set in his Mando-verse, a Dawn of the Jedi movie led by James Mangold, and a New Jedi Order feature directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy featuring Daisy Ridley reprising her role as Rey post-The Rise of Skywalker. The Obaid-Chinoy project has seen some changes, with screenwriter Steven Knight recently departing after taking over from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Despite these shifts, Rey remains a central figure in Disney's future plans, with reports indicating she'll appear in several upcoming Star Wars films.
Additionally, X-Men producer Simon Kinberg is set to write a new trilogy that won't be a continuation of the Skywalker Saga, as initially speculated. Fans can look forward to the next Star Wars series, Season 2 of Andor, premiering on Disney+ on April 22 with a triple premiere episode, promising more thrilling adventures in the Star Wars universe.
