Project Zomboid: How to Board Up Windows

Author:Kristen Update:Jan 04,2025

In the zombie-infested world of Project Zomboid, securing your shelter is paramount. While finding a safe haven is relatively straightforward, keeping the undead hordes at bay requires strategic defense. This guide focuses on a fundamental yet effective method: barricading windows.

How to Barricade Windows in Project Zomboid

To effectively board your windows, you'll need specific materials: a wooden plank, a hammer, and four nails. Once you've gathered these essentials, simply right-click the target window. Your character will automatically begin securing the plank. Each window supports up to four planks for enhanced protection.

Locating these materials is key. Hammers and nails are commonly found in toolboxes, garages, sheds, and closets. Wooden planks are frequently discovered at construction sites, or, in a pinch, can be salvaged by dismantling wooden furniture like shelves or chairs. Administrators can utilize the "/additem" command to spawn items directly.

Barricaded windows significantly hinder zombie access. The more planks installed, the more time it takes for them to breach the defense. To remove planks, right-click the boards and select "Remove." Note that you'll require a claw hammer or crowbar to accomplish this.

It's important to note that larger furniture items, like bookshelves or refrigerators, are ineffective as window barriers in Project Zomboid. Characters and zombies will pass right through them. However, knowing how to move furniture remains a valuable skill for interior arrangement.

While wooden planks offer a basic defense, more advanced barricades can be constructed using metal bars or sheets, but this requires sufficient Metalworking skill.
