Set a year after Professor Layton and the Unwound Future, the new game reunites Professor Layton and Luke Triton in Steam Bison, a vibrant American city powered by steam technology. Their investigation centers around a puzzling mystery involving Gunman King Joe, a legendary gunslinger.

The game retains the series' hallmark brain-teasing puzzles, enhanced this time by collaboration with QuizKnock, renowned for innovative puzzle creation. This partnership is particularly significant, given the mixed reception of Layton's Mystery Journey due to its altered focus.
