Overwatch 2 Unveils Extended 6v6 Playtest

Overwatch 2's 6v6 Playtest Extended, Transitioning to Open Queue

Overwatch 2's popular 6v6 playtest, initially slated to end January 6th, has been extended due to overwhelming player enthusiasm. Game Director Aaron Keller announced the extension, confirming the mode's availability until mid-season. After this, it will shift to an open queue format, allowing 1-3 heroes per class per team. There's strong potential for 6v6 to become a permanent fixture.

The 6v6 mode's initial run during last year's Overwatch Classic event showcased its appeal. A subsequent playtest, starting December 17th, also proved highly successful. This continued popularity prompted the extension. While the exact end date remains unannounced, the mode will soon move to the Arcade section.

The Argument for Permanent 6v6

The enduring popularity of 6v6 isn't unexpected. Since Overwatch 2's 2022 launch, a return to 6v6 has been a top player request. The shift to 5v5 gameplay significantly altered the game, impacting player experience differently.

The extended playtest fuels hope for 6v6's permanent inclusion, potentially even in competitive playlists. This possibility hinges on the successful completion of the ongoing playtests.
