Hori's Nintendo Switch 2 Piranha Plant camera offers a resolution of just 480p, which falls short compared to Nintendo's official Switch 2 camera. The UK My Nintendo Store has confirmed the resolutions for both cameras: the Nintendo Switch 2 Camera boasts a video capture quality of 1080p, while the Piranha Plant Camera for Nintendo Switch 2 is limited to a resolution of 640 × 480.

Hori's Piranha Plant camera, officially licensed by Nintendo, comes at a lower price point than Nintendo's own $49.99 camera. It's important to note that you can use either the Nintendo Switch 2 camera accessory or any compatible USB-C camera with the Switch 2. Both cameras are set to be released alongside the Switch 2 on June 5.

The Piranha Plant camera has a unique feature where the part housing the webcam can detach from the pot, allowing you to place it directly on top of the Switch 2 for enhanced portability, which Nintendo's camera does not offer. Additionally, you can close the plant's mouth to cover the lens.

Nintendo fans were taken aback by the news that the Piranha Plant camera is only 480p. "How do you even make a 480p camera in 2025?" questioned redditor Ramen536Pie. "That must be harder to do than a 1080p camera." LizardsoftheGhost found it amusing, commenting, "That’s actually hilarious. Maybe they meant to release this back when the Wii U came out." Pokemonfitness1420 added, "Isn't 480p a crime nowadays?"

During last week's Nintendo Direct, Nintendo unveiled the Switch 2's GameChat functionality, which is activated by pressing the C button on the new Joy-Con. Players can watch each other playing the same or different games, and with the aid of a camera, can even see each other. The built-in microphone is noted for its reliability across various gaming environments. The C button's chat menu is designed to be a comprehensive multiplayer feature, potentially marking Nintendo's most successful online endeavor in years.
