Ninja Gaiden 4 and Ninja Gaiden 2 Black: A Double Dose of Ninja Action
The Xbox Developer Direct 2025 delivered a thrilling surprise: the announcement of both Ninja Gaiden 4 and Ninja Gaiden 2 Black. Team Ninja, celebrating its 30th anniversary, declared 2025 "The Year of the Ninja," promising a revitalized franchise.
Ninja Gaiden 4: A New Era Begins
Developed by the collaborative might of Team Ninja and PlatinumGames, Ninja Gaiden 4 marks a significant return after a 13-year hiatus. This direct sequel to Ninja Gaiden 3 promises the series' signature blend of brutal, rewarding gameplay. The partnership with Xbox is a natural progression, given their history with Team Ninja's previous titles.
A New Protagonist Takes Center Stage
Ninja Gaiden 4 introduces Yakumo, a young ninja from the rival Raven clan, striving to achieve Master Ninja status. PlatinumGames' Art Director, Tomoko Nishii, explains Yakumo's design as a figure who can stand alongside the legendary Ryu Hayabusa. Producer and Director Yuji Nakao clarifies the decision to introduce a new protagonist: to broaden the appeal to new players while ensuring long-time fans remain engaged through Ryu's pivotal role in the narrative.
Yakumo will face formidable foes, including the ultimate challenge: Ryu Hayabusa himself. Rest assured, Ryu remains playable, his presence deeply felt throughout the game.
Revamped Combat: A Fusion of Styles
Ninja Gaiden 4 retains the series' hallmark fast-paced, brutal combat, introducing the Bloodbind Ninjutsu Nue Style alongside Yakumo's Raven Style. Team Ninja's Masazaku Hirayama assures fans that while distinct, both styles maintain the core Ninja Gaiden feel. Nakao emphasizes the game's commitment to challenging gameplay while incorporating PlatinumGames' signature speed and dynamism.
The game is nearing completion (70-80% finished), currently in the polishing phase. Further details are forthcoming, and hands-on opportunities are planned.
Release Date and Availability
Ninja Gaiden 4 launches in Fall 2025 on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5. It will be a day-one Xbox Game Pass title.
Ninja Gaiden 2 Black: A Remastered Classic
Simultaneously, Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, a remake of the 2008 Xbox 360 classic, is available now on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5, and included with Xbox Game Pass. This enhanced version features additional playable characters from Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2: Ayane, Momiji, and Rachel.
This remake serves as a satisfying prelude to Ninja Gaiden 4, offering both nostalgic enjoyment for veterans and a modern action experience for newcomers.
