Small swords in NieR: Automata are characterized by their rapid attack speed and compact hitbox. They offer a balanced approach against diverse enemies. While weapon upgrades enhance their longevity, numerous powerful, upgradable weapons exist, with the Type-40 Sword being a prime example. However, obtaining this sword requires completing a specific side quest chain.

Unlocking the Type-40 Sword

The Type-40 Sword is the reward for completing the side quest "Find A Present," the culmination of a questline involving Operator 6O. To unlock this quest, two preceding quests must be finished:

1. Post-Chapter 5: After defeating Adam and Eve in Chapter 5, you'll receive a call from Operator 6O initiating the "Investigating Communications" quest. Complete this immediately as it's easily missed.

2. Chapter 6 & 7 Progression: Advance through Chapter 6 (Forest Castle events) and into Chapter 7. After speaking with Pascal about A2, explore the city ruins to trigger another call from Operator 6O, leading to the "Terminal Repairs" quest. Access this quest via an access point.

3. Final Call & "Find A Present": During your return to the Resistance Camp in Chapter 7, a final call from Operator 6O will initiate the "Find a Present" quest. Check your inbox for the quest message.

4. Reward: Completing "Find a Present" delivers the Type-40 Sword to your inbox.

Type-40 Sword Stats & Upgrades

At level 1, the Type-40 Sword boasts a 5-hit light attack combo and a 3-hit heavy attack combo. Upgrading it to level 4 increases the light attack combo to 7 hits and enhances its effectiveness against stunned enemies. Titanium Alloy is required for these upgrades.
