Monster Hunter Wilds Developers Consider Adding a New Weapon Type

A 15th Weapon Type Remains a Possibility

After over a decade with the same fourteen weapon types, the Monster Hunter series might finally see an addition. In a February 16, 2025 interview with PCGamesN, Monster Hunter Wilds Director Yuya Tokuda discussed the possibility of introducing a new weapon. While acknowledging the team's interest and past consideration during MH World and Wilds development, he explained, "It’s not off the table for any particular reason; it’s just that we never really decided that we wanted to for the recent titles."

Tokuda highlighted the difficulty in designing a weapon that doesn't overlap significantly with existing options. He elaborated, "With each title, we adjust all weapon types, introducing new concepts and refining their interrelationships to maintain freshness. We add new combos and moves to increase depth. The resources and time required for this have consistently led us to prioritize enhancing the existing lineup rather than adding a new one since the last weapon's introduction."

Capcom's Approach to Weapon Refinement in Monster Hunter Wilds

Capcom continues to innovate, refining weapons for MH Wilds with additions like Focus Mode and Power Clash. While incorporating community feedback from the beta, Tokuda clarified, "We don’t want to change anything so drastically that it doesn’t feel like that weapon anymore."

He detailed their weapon balancing process: "We have a concept for each title—'This is how the Insect Glaive will feel, this is how the Great Sword will feel.' This is just a concept, though. Design and testing are crucial, but only player feedback reveals if the concept aligns with reality and delivers the intended experience."

Addressing Wilds' weapon adjustments, Tokuda admitted, "Balancing weapons in Wilds proved challenging. Iceborne, the predecessor, significantly expanded each weapon's advanced moves and abilities due to its master rank difficulty. Players were assumed to have mastered the basics, so we focused on adding new combos, moves, and abilities."

However, MH Wilds represents a fresh start, with a complete overhaul. Tokuda emphasized, "I carefully considered retaining elements solely because players liked them in the previous game, ensuring they fit the gameplay concept of this title."
