A Direct Competition?

The launch of Marvel Rivals on December 5th coincided with a significant drop in Overwatch 2's Steam player count. Overwatch 2 reached its all-time low on Steam, with player numbers dipping below 20,000, while Marvel Rivals saw a massive influx of players, boasting significantly higher concurrent player counts, including a peak far exceeding Overwatch 2's peak. Both games share a similar free-to-play, team-based shooter formula, leading to direct comparisons. However, Overwatch 2's Steam reviews are "Mixed," while Marvel Rivals enjoys a "Mostly Positive" rating, suggesting a difference in player satisfaction.

Steam Represents a Small Portion of the Overall Player Base

It's crucial to remember that Steam represents only a fraction of Overwatch 2's total player base. Available on multiple platforms including Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and Battle.net, the game's player count on Steam might not accurately reflect its overall performance. Many players prefer the Battle.net version, especially considering the Steam port's relatively recent arrival in 2023. Furthermore, cross-platform play necessitates a Battle.net account, potentially driving players to that platform.

Despite the Steam numbers, Overwatch 2 recently launched Season 14, featuring new content like the Scottish tank hero Hazard, a new limited-time mode, and the Winter Wonderland event.

Both Overwatch 2 and Marvel Rivals are free-to-play on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Overwatch 2 is also available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
