Larian Focuses on New Game, Imposes Media Blackout

Author:Kristen Update:Feb 22,2025

Larian Studios, the creators of the critically acclaimed Baldur's Gate 3, have announced a complete shift in focus to their next, unannounced project. The studio has implemented a media blackout, indicating a significant period of silence regarding their future endeavors.

While Baldur's Gate 3's highly anticipated Patch 8 is slated for release later this year, Larian's CEO, Swen Vincke, confirmed via Twitter and a subsequent statement to VideoGamer that the team's full attention is dedicated to their new game. This new title will not be a Baldur's Gate sequel or any other D&D-related project, but rather an entirely original creation. The decision to pursue a new IP stems from a lack of internal enthusiasm for a Baldur's Gate continuation.

Previous statements by Vincke offer only vague hints about the nature of this upcoming game. In November 2023, he alluded to its boundary-pushing ambition, expressing significant excitement about the project. While a Divinity: Original Sin sequel has been mentioned as a possibility in the future (July 2023), it's not expected to be the studio's immediate focus after the intensive development of Baldur's Gate 3.

The nature of Larian's next game remains shrouded in mystery. Given their established expertise in fantasy RPGs, the possibility of venturing into science fiction, modern settings, or even entirely new genres is open to speculation. It's likely that significant time, potentially years, will pass before any concrete details are revealed.
