Jack Black Builds Mansion on Private Minecraft Movie Server

Author:Kristen Update:May 20,2025

The recently released *A Minecraft Movie* has taken an innovative approach to authenticity by integrating the game into its production process. The film's team set up a private Minecraft server for the entire cast and crew, allowing them to immerse themselves in the game's world. This unique strategy not only helped in capturing the essence of Minecraft but also fostered a collaborative environment reminiscent of an indie game studio, as described by producer Torfi Frans Ólafsson to IGN. The server became a hub for creativity, where ideas were constantly shared, although not all could be implemented due to the film's ongoing production.

Director Jared Hess highlighted the enthusiasm of Jack Black, who portrayed Steve in the movie. Black's dedication to the game was evident as he spent time in his trailer harvesting resources like lapis lazuli and building structures. His commitment to embodying a "real Minecrafter" led him to construct a massive mansion atop the highest mountain on the server, complete with a stairway and an art gallery in the basement. Black's playful yet earnest approach to the game contributed to a dynamic and evolving creative process on set.

Ólafsson confirmed that Black's mansion still stands on the server, which he extended for a year. Interestingly, even after the film's completion, security guards from the set continued to explore and enjoy the server, showcasing the lasting impact of this immersive approach to filmmaking.
