David Fincher and Brad Pitt are set to collaborate once again, this time to bring a sequel to Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood to life. According to The Playlist, the dynamic duo behind Se7en is working on a project that could potentially redefine Tarantino's filmography, with the film slated for release on Netflix. This move continues Fincher's successful partnership with the streaming service. The sequel, currently untitled, is expected to feature Pitt reprising his role as the stuntman Cliff Booth.

The screenplay, which originated from Tarantino's previously shelved project The Movie Critic, has evolved into this new sequel. Tarantino, who had initially planned The Movie Critic to be his final film, decided against letting the story languish and instead entrusted it to Fincher. The Playlist reports that Netflix has acquired the script for $20 million and plans to allocate a $200 million budget for production, with filming scheduled to start in California in July. While no other casting details have been confirmed, it appears that Leonardo DiCaprio will not be returning as Rick Dalton. Both Fincher and Pitt are fully committed to this project, setting aside all other endeavors to focus on this sequel.

Deadline has also confirmed the development of the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood sequel, noting that Pitt received Tarantino's approval to pitch the script to Fincher, leading to this unexpected collaboration.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, released in 2019, is considered a stellar addition to Tarantino's oeuvre. However, the sequel faces the challenge of living up to its predecessor, which concluded with a definitive and impactful ending. The world of the original film has been further explored in Tarantino's 2021 novelization, which delves deeper into the 1960s California setting and provides new insights into Cliff Booth's backstory, including the contentious issue of whether he killed his wife. This novelization is likely to gain additional significance once the sequel is released, though its exact relevance to the film remains to be seen.
