"Conan O'Brien Exposes Bizarre Academy Rules for Oscars Statues in Promos"

Author:Kristen Update:May 20,2025

In a surprising twist of events, former Oscars host Conan O'Brien disclosed on his podcast, "Conan Needs a Friend," that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences rejected his creative promotional ideas for the Oscars ceremony. O'Brien had envisioned a humorous series of ads featuring him and a 9-foot tall Oscar statue as a couple navigating everyday life.

One of O'Brien's concepts involved the Oscar statue lounging on a couch while he vacuumed, playfully asking the statue to lift its feet or help with chores. However, the Academy firmly declined, citing strict rules about the portrayal of the Oscar statue.

“We’re fighting about things couples fight about,” O’Brien shared, highlighting the domestic nature of his proposed skits. Yet, the Academy's response was a resounding no. “Oscar can never be horizontal,” an Academy representative reportedly stated, likening the statue to a sacred relic. This rule also extended to the statue's attire, with the Academy insisting it remain unclothed, dashing O'Brien's idea of the Oscar in an apron serving leftovers.

The Academy's stringent guidelines on the Oscar statue's depiction seem peculiar, but they are within their rights to enforce them. It's a shame that viewers missed out on O'Brien's unique comedic take on the Oscars. Hopefully, O'Brien will return with equally inventive ideas for future ceremonies. We're rooting for him to host again in 2026.
