The upcoming Borderlands film, directed by Eli Roth, is generating significant buzz, but early critical reception paints a largely negative picture. Let's delve into the initial reviews and what moviegoers can anticipate.

A Critical Mauling, Despite Star Power

Early reviews for the Borderlands movie adaptation have been overwhelmingly harsh. Critics, following the film's early US screenings, have voiced their disappointment across social media platforms. Common criticisms include weak humor, unconvincing CGI, and a lackluster script.

Edgar Ortega of Loud and Clear Reviews tweeted, "Borderlands feels like what a disconnected executive thinks 'cool' is. No genuine character moments, just stale, unfunny lines. It's not even 'so bad it's good,' just a mess."

Darren Movie Reviews from Movie Scene Canada called it "a baffling video game adaptation," praising the potential world-building but faulting a rushed and uninspired screenplay. He noted the impressive set design was undermined by poor CGI.

However, not all reviews were entirely negative. Film critic Kurt Morrison pointed out that Cate Blanchett and Kevin Hart's performances were highlights, preventing a complete disaster, though he expressed doubt about the film's box office success. The Hollywood Handle offered a slightly more optimistic view, describing it as a "fun PG-13 action movie" carried by Blanchett's performance.

Despite a star-studded cast, announced in 2020 after a period of development, the film faced skepticism from fans of the video game franchise from its inception.

The film follows Cate Blanchett as Lilith, returning to Pandora to find the missing daughter of Atlas (Edgar Ramirez). She teams up with an eclectic group: Kevin Hart as Roland, Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina, Florian Munteanu as Krieg, Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis, and Jack Black as Claptrap.

As major publications release their full reviews in the coming days, audiences will soon be able to judge for themselves when Borderlands hits theaters on August 9th. Meanwhile, Gearbox has hinted at a new Borderlands game.
