Bayonetta Celebrates 15 Years of Enchanting Action

PlatinumGames is commemorating the 15th anniversary of the original Bayonetta with a year-long celebration, expressing gratitude to fans for their enduring support. The original game, released in October 2009 (Japan) and January 2010 (globally), garnered critical acclaim for its innovative design and exhilarating gameplay, a hallmark of director Hideki Kamiya's signature style. This success spawned sequels exclusively on Nintendo platforms.

Bayonetta's unique blend of creative storytelling and fast-paced, Devil May Cry-inspired combat quickly established the titular character as a prominent figure among female video game protagonists. While Sega published the first installment across multiple platforms, Nintendo secured publishing rights for the subsequent sequels, releasing them on the Wii U and Nintendo Switch. A prequel, Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon, featuring a younger Bayonetta, launched on the Switch in 2023. The adult Bayonetta also made appearances as a playable character in recent Super Smash Bros. titles.

PlatinumGames recently announced a "Bayonetta 15th Anniversary Year" for 2025, promising special announcements and merchandise throughout the year. While specifics remain under wraps, the developer encourages fans to follow their social media channels for updates.

Currently, Wayo Records offers a limited-edition Bayonetta music box, showcasing the original Super Mirror design and playing "Theme Of Bayonetta - Mysterious Destiny" composed by Masami Ueda. PlatinumGames is also releasing monthly Bayonetta-themed smartphone wallpapers, with January's featuring Bayonetta and Jeanne in kimonos.

Even fifteen years later, Bayonetta remains influential, refining the stylish action genre pioneered by Devil May Cry. Its innovative mechanics, such as Witch Time, have significantly impacted subsequent PlatinumGames titles like Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance and Nier: Automata. Fans eagerly await further announcements throughout this special anniversary year.
