2XKO Hopes to Revolutionize Tag-Team fighting Games

Author:Kristen Update:Jan 09,2025

Riot Games' highly anticipated 2XKO (formerly Project L) is set to revolutionize the tag-team fighting game genre. This article explores its innovative tag-team mechanics and the recently available playable demo.

Redefining Tag-Team Combat

2XKO's Innovative Tag-Team Mechanics 2XKO, showcased at EVO 2024, introduces "Duo Play," a unique twist on the traditional 2v2 format. Instead of one player controlling both characters, two players team up, each controlling a champion. This creates thrilling four-player matches, with each team comprising a "Point" character (primary attacker) and an "Assist" character (support). Even 2v1 matchups are possible.

The game's tag system features three key elements:

  • Assist Actions: The Point character can summon the Assist for special moves.
  • Handshake Tag: A quick switch between Point and Assist roles.
  • Dynamic Save: The Assist can intervene to break up enemy combos.

Unlike many tag fighters where a single knockout ends the match, 2XKO requires both players on a team to be defeated. Defeated champions remain active as Assists, offering strategic depth.

Strategic Synergies: The "Fuse" System

2XKO's Character Select Screen Beyond character selection, 2XKO introduces "Fuses," pre-match synergy options that alter team playstyles. The demo showcased five Fuses:

  • PULSE: Rapid attacks for powerful combos.
  • FURY: Increased damage and dash cancel below 40% health.
  • FREESTYLE: Allows two Handshake Tags in quick succession.
  • DOUBLE DOWN: Combine ultimate abilities with your partner's.
  • 2X ASSIST: More frequent and powerful Assist actions.

Game designer Daniel Maniago highlighted the Fuse system's ability to enhance player expression and facilitate devastating coordinated attacks.

The Roster and Alpha Playtest

The playable demo featured six champions: Braum, Ahri, Darius, Ekko, Yasuo, and Illaoi, each with moves reflecting their League of Legends counterparts. While Jinx and Katarina were absent from this initial demo, their inclusion is confirmed for the future.

2XKO's Diverse Champion Roster 2XKO is free-to-play and launching on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 in 2025. An Alpha Lab Playtest ran from August 8th to 19th, offering early access to the game. Check the official website for details.
