Basierend auf den Graphic Novels von BOOM! Studios von Arash Amel, liefert Butterfly einen "charaktergetriebenen Spionagethriller, der Familiendrama mit der erbarmungslosen Welt der internationalen Spionage verwebt."

Die Serie folgt David Jung (Kim), einem unberechenbaren ehemaligen US-Geheimdienstagenten, der in Südkorea lebt. Seine prekäre Existenz zerbricht, als vergangene Entscheidungen wieder auftauchen und ihn in ein tödliches Katz-und-Maus-Spiel mit Rebecca (Hardesty) zwingen, einer skrupellosen Attentäterin im Dienste der zwielichtigen Caddis-Organisation.

"Butterfly erfüllt meine Vision, amerikanische und koreanische Erzähltraditionen zu vereinen", erklärte Kim. "Das unglaubliche kreative Team und unsere internationale Besetzung haben diese beiden Kulturen, die mir so viel bedeuten, wunderbar eingefangen."

Ken Woodruff, bekannt aus The Mentalist und Gotham, fungiert als Showrunner gemeinsam mit der Romanautorin Steph Cha. Zum Ensemble gehören Kim Ji-hoon, Park Hae-soo, Kim Tae-hee, Charles Parnell, Sean Dulake und Nayoon Kim, mit Gastauftritten von Sung Dong-il und Lee Il-hwa.
